  17. <p>     The pastoral letter read out in Catholic churches last month
  18. was direct. "In our society we are aware of a growing gap between
  19. rich and poor," it said. "Bribery and nepotism are growing." In
  20. Malawi, where President-for-Life Hastings Kamuzu Banda has ruled
  21. with an iron hand for 28 years, tolerating no dissent,
  22. congregations were rocked in their pews.

  24. <p>     Banda hit back. The authors--an Archbishop, five bishops
  25. and a monsignor--were interrogated and reportedly placed
  26. under house arrest at the Archbishop's residence. Though free
  27. now, the clerics stay with friends at night for greater safety.
  28. Aid-donor countries are likely to ask for an explanation at a
  29. meeting next month.
